Vanessa & Frank- Maternity session

Jasmine & Neil- esession

Jasmine and Neil are getting married in Jasper this September and I am so looking forward to this mountain wedding. It's a perfect place for this adorable couple to wed since they enjoy tearing up ski hills together. They also love the Oilers, much like Tim and myself, and any couple who can toughen out this dismal season shows a level of commitment that will make marriage a breeze...just kidding.

Little Miss Violet

So I have gotten a number of emails requesting more pictures of the little miss and I'd love to share some with you all. I haven't taken very many images of her ( strange, I know) but it is just so busy being a new mom. And now she is growing like crazy- she is already 7 pounds and 8 ounces- finally the size of a normal newborn after 9 weeks! Violet is already a funny kid and we are both absolutely smitten with every little thing she does. We are so very blessed!

So here she is, the reason why my blog and business has nearly been abandoned the last 9 weeks.....

Aimee & Mike- January 2 2010

Aimee and Mike were married on January 2 at the River Cree Resort. Unfortunately I had Violet via C-section only days earlier and was unable to photograph the event. I always knew that an early delivery was possible and so we had back-up plans in place-and it all worked out wonderfully. Shaun Scade and my second shooter Kelly McKay covered the event on the freezing cold day. The bridal party were a bunch of real troopers heading out into the snow and the pictures are worth their effort. Here are a few teasers from their big day:

Baby Teagan

I had the honour of photographing Stacey & Justin's wedding last May and now have been lucky enough to watch their family grow. We were able to get together during the cold spell in December while Stacey was pregnant for some maternity shots- just a week before our Violet was born. Now baby Teagan has made his grand entrance. He is the cutest little man- absolutely perfect!

Enjoy a few images of day four in his life & a couple more of his proud parents anxiously awaiting his arrival.

A Very Special Announcement

Hello Friends,

I just wanted to share our good news with you. Tim and I are pleased to announce the early arrival of our daughter, Violet Kavell. She was born 5 weeks early and surprised us all. We are so lucky in Canada to have such good doctors and hospitals that can provide us with emergency health care. We feel so blessed that she is healthy and strong. What an amazing Christmas gift.

Violet Kavell. Born December 28th at 11:20pm. 17 inches long, 5 pounds 7 ounces. She has blond hair, a double chin and a dimple on her right cheek. She is perfect and we love her so very much already.

I will be a taking some time to spend with my new daughter and Tim. Our new family has lots of adjusting to do and we can't wait to get to know our little Violet better.

Christmas Challenge 2009

It's the holiday season again and there's no better way to spread the joy of Christmas then to give to those less fortunate then yourself. So this year for my Annual Christmas Challenge we will be collecting toys for children in our community. Please bring by an unwrapped gift for a child and in return you will awarded with an 8x10 from your wedding or engagement session. It's that simple :)

There are a few guidelines in order to receive your 8x10-

-This offer is for current 2009 wedding/portrait clients & future 2010 wedding clients.

-You can earn up to a maximum ten 8x10 custom prints per couple/family.

-Only gifts dropped off at my studio will be eligible for 8x10's, but I really do think it's great if you already have donated at the mall or at a Christmas party.

-While I will gladly accept stocking stuffers and small gifts (like hot wheels, crayons and colouring books) only larger gifts will be awarded an 8x10 (just think about the presents children you know personally would love to open on Christmas morning and go from there)

- Please follow the Suggestions on the http://www.santasanonymous.ca/ website. They are often short on gifts for the 9-12 age category. I like the suggestion of Boardgames and craft sets. Santa's Anonymous has great ideas for kids in each category.

-If you purchase an item that needs accessories please try to include them with it. For example send batteries with battery operated toys, extra clothes with a barbie etc.

It's been a couple of years since I last had the Edmonton Christmas Bureau as my charity of choice for the holiday season, but I do know in that in that year I had to make two drop off trips in my Matrix since soooo many wonderful gifts were donated. I hope have that problem again this year and since my clients are all so awesome and generous, I'm sure it won't be a problem!

Megan and Corey are getting married next June in Fort Saskatchewan. We finally got meet up for engagement photos after countless rescheduling and after being rained out so many appointments. It was great to finally connect with them and get to know them a bit better. Thanks for a nice fall afternoon in the country :)

Angelika & Sebastian were married in Edmonton at St Joseph's Basilica followed by a reception full of dancing and games at the Royal Glenora club. They make such a great couple, so obviously meant to be together. I really enjoyed being a part of their day and sharing in all the laughs. The best part was when the Bridal Party entered the ballroom complete with costumes and choreographed dance moves. Very impressive! Enjoy a small random sampling from the day...

it was "cold" is only relative since they are getting married in early January and it will probably be a bit chillier then! What can I say, they are brave! Aimee & Mike are so cute together...but I gotta admit that their puppy, Lulu, totally stole the show...

Baby Isaiah

It was wonderful to meet Baby Isaiah after meeting his parents at our maternity session this fall. He is absolutely adorable...and already far cooler than me :) The little guy wanted nothing to do with being naked- as soon as the onsie came off, he was just not a happy camper. We tried heating pads and everything, but soon gave into his wish of being bundled up nice and warm. What a sweetheart!

Christmas Album Deadline

Hi Everyone,

So this is a bit of a lame post- no pictures- but I just wanted to make sure everyone knows my album approval deadline for Christmas delivery is next week. Please let me know asap if you are wanting your wedding album before the holidays. For prints, canvases and other goodies the deadline is December 5th. I know I've talked to most of you, but just wanted to give you another heads up in case.

And yes- I'm very behind on blogging- too busy working on some beautiful albums! Check back next week for another wedding post, some engagement shoots, babies and a family session. Fun stuff coming up soon on the blog....

I hope everyone is enjoying their October. Where has the time gone??? I can't believe our little one will making his/her's appearance in less then three months! Yeek!

Andrea & Tim- October 17 2009

Andrea and Tim were married in Red Deer Alberta on Saturday and I was lucky enough to make the trip south to join them. They are two of the most genuine, sweetest people you could ever meet. The day went by so quickly and without a hitch. I knew Andrea in High School when we were both in drama productions together :) I actually spotted a picture of myself in her slideshow- dressed as a fairy- but from Midsummer Night's Dream- so acceptable. It's the first time I've made it into a clients slideshow, so it was kinda fun. After the speeches the DJ got everyone dancing to classic wedding music, it looked like a lot of fun doing the locomotion around-and outside- the hall. Hope the rest of the party went as well as your entire day and I wish you nothing but happiness in your life together.

Jennifer and Mark are getting married next August at the beautiful Chateau Lake Louise. I'm already excited for their day! We got together to shoot their engagement portraits this week- another shoot in the cold! Edmonton's winter sure came early this year- what happened to the fall season? But the three of us toughed it out in the ravine with temperatures just around freezing. I really liked getting to know them better- we definitely shared a lot in common.

Angela & Mike were married at one of my favourite Edmonton locations, The Union Bank Inn. Even though Edmonton surprised us with a small snow storm that day, everyone was excited to be part of their day. We ventured out into the giant flakes for some portraits before the ceremony and gorgeous reception with decor from Nuance Occasions. Their wedding was small, intimate and the ended up being perfect day to be warm and cozy indoors.

Christine and Kyle were married at the Radisson in Canmore, Alberta surrounded by the natural beauty of the Rockies. It felt a little like a winter wedding, and not a fall wedding with temperatures dropping to -15 with the brisk wind chill. Brrr! I really felt for the couple and their bridal party as we took pictures outside. However with the help of pocket warmers, gloves, afghans and snuggling we managed to get through the day alright!

Brianne and Josh were married at the St. Albert Parish and I was lucky enough to join them for part of their lovely day. We enjoyed shooting their portraits at an Aunt's farm and their home provided great shelter from the crazy wind storm! However, a hurricane couldn't have dampened Brianne & Josh's spirits since I didn't hear a word of complaint all day even though wind speed was nearly unbearable. I was super impressed with the entire bridal party and their great sense of humour and fun.

The most amazing picture ever taken....

Summer is always a busy time as wedding photographer. Between the weddings and the esessions and all the excitement of the in betweens, things get a bit chaotic around here. However, I always feel incredibly blessed to be able to do what I do and enjoy my job so much. I really am grateful to spend my time with such wonderful people and surround myself with an abundance of love on a everyday basis. And now it turns out we are just adding a *little* more love to our equation.

Yes, that's right....We are expecting our first baby in January. We are getting ready to have our world shifted upside down by a tiny addition. Although the pregnancy is taking up a little bit extra of my time and sucking out a little bit of my energy, it is a fantastic blessing and we are getting incredibly excited to have a new miss or mister join us in our household.

A blog post wouldn't be complete without a picture. Right now I'm over 21 weeks into my pregnancy and have an ultrasound picture taken yesterday to share with you all. You can see it's little hand up by it's face waving to the all blog readers:

The new baby will change things up a little for next year- I'm only taking a more limited amount of weddings for the new year and I'm hoping to start photographing a few more babies myself :) (But more on that later) Right now I'm not sure of maternity leave or anything like that, but I do know that I'll try to get as much done as I can this fall to keep the months after the little ones arrival as quiet as realistically possible. Keeping my mind open to the new experience....

Kirsteen & Kyle were married in a traditional Lutheran Church ceremony followed by beautiful Reception at the Fanastyland Hotel Ballroom. Their wedding had lots of Scottish traditions including bagpipers, kilts and Scottish sword dancers. It was fun to see a couple embrace their Heritage. Although with their blond hair, laid back personalities and extremely good looks I always think that they belong more on a beach in Southern California rather then in Edmonton mall :)

Alanna & Dave were married in Sherwood Park at Festival Place in a beautiful ceremony in the large theatre. Afterwards they celebrated amongst family and Friends in the wonderfully decorated foyer by Behind The Scenes Events. I loved the silver and black look, very vogue. We headed out to the country side for their formal pictures. Alanna wanted her pictures in a off leash dog park they frequent visit just outside the city - you can see how the words "off leash" and "dog park" threw out red flags for me. I could just see a million dogs jumping all over her white dress. Fortunately the puppies were all well behaved and we enjoyed our walks through the trails.

Janet- Expecting

Although the weather was gorgeous all day, the moment we began shooting the clouds rolled in. Marisa & Rob- esession

Marisa & Rob are blessed with a great number of things. Beautiful looks, a loving relationship, great senses of humour and lastly, gorgeous light on their engagement session night. I basically live for summer evenings like that one, where the light dances across the field and warmth of the day lingers into sunset. Marisa & Rob were very fun to work with and we had quite a few adventures of our own that night- including being asked by a person (with subjectable clothing and home maintenance issues) to pay her 100.00 to take picture in her nearby field/old buildings. However her language was a lot more colourful. Good thing rural Alberta is filled with dilapidated old buildings and friendlier people who don't mind you spending a little time in their abandoned farms.

I also enjoyed thinking up famous people that Marisa & Rob looked like. I thought up quite a few, only problem was I called poor Rob by another name a couple of times while thinking up these celebrities. It was compliments I assure you :)

Jacqui & Steve- August 22 2009

Jacqui and Steve were married at the Downtown Westin Hotel followed immediately by a reception full of laughs and a few tears. We met before the ceremony to take our formal pictures and hang out with the Bridal Party while walking around downtown wedding. This was my second wedding in a row with a swollen eye (See Angelika & Seb's esession post below for details) but thankfully it opened up a bit as the day went on. Not terribly attractive, but it worked! They were very sweet about it and I didn't get a single joke made at my expense (that I know of, lol). Jennifer from Jennifer Bergman Weddings had the reception running down to the minute. It was awesome having a schedule so well kept! The dance started at 9pm ON THE DOT. I was super impressed :) Totally recommend her.

The day went by quickly and smoothly. Thanks so much for including me. I hope you have fun in Europe..I can't remember all the awesome places you are going over the next month but I know it will amazing!

Courtenay & Trevor- August 21 2009

Courtenay & Trevor were married early Friday morning at Winspear Centre. The ceremony was very sweet followed by a luncheon in the Founders' Room. Morning was full of cute details- all yellow and grey with a retro vibe. Jolyn from Nuance Occasions really put together an adorable wedding that was just soooo Courtenay & Trevor.

I really enjoyed spending a few hours with you and your family- and really appreciated your understanding when I showed up at 9:30am with one eye swollen shut (due to the Wasp sting incident- read last post for details...). You were so sweet about the whole thing- this is why I love my clients! The pain of the swollen eye would have been nothing compared to missing this beautiful day :)

Hope you are having lots of fun in Italy on your honeymoon. Have some gelato for me!

Angelika & Sebastian- esession

Well, this was a session for books... Angelika & Sebastian are a great couple who are a ton of fun and totally in love. Angelika's mom is portrait photographer here in the city, so she is no stranger to the camera. We started out in front of a cool old building in a field, I'm happily beginning to set to shoot when Sebastian says "I think that's a Wasp's nest" pointing to pile of junk next to him. I bent down for a closer look and immediately got a wasp caught under my glasses and got stung (bitten?) right on the eyelid. Honestly, what are the chances? We booted out of there pretty quick but since I have probably been stung 20+ times in my life (hazard of being a free-spirited kid growing up on a acreage) I really wasn't worried about it. I just breathed through the pain and again tried to begin the shoot. We ended up having some fun trekking across some fields despite my eyelid throbbing a bit :)

Thanks for not laughing at me as I did my "get-the-wasp-out-of-my-glasses-dance", you guys were awesome!

Natalie and Jeremy are a very special couple. You see, Jeremy is deploying to Afghanistan in a few short weeks with our Canadian Armed Forces. You have to be a very amazing type of person to do that sort of thing...and a special kind of girl to be able to watch him go. As I took pictures of them together I witnessed their bond and felt little bit of their pain in saying goodbye. Lots of tight squeezes, kisses and long glances filled my camera.

MaryAnn & Richard- August 15 2009

Mary-Ann and Richard were married at their weekend home in the Nicola Valley near Merritt, BC. They are a little bit country, a little bit city and their wedding was also a little bit of both. Mary-Ann did a great job with all the details and the day was stunning from beginning to end. Most impressively, they asked only for donations to their favourite charity, Union Gospel Mission, a wonderful east side Vancouver project, instead of gifts. What an amazing way to remember those less fortunate as you celebrate all your blessings. They wedding was also filled with lots of fun, from a kids summer camp set-up for the children attending to the all the adults taking part in a 'write a country song' competition during the reception. Every table was given words that had to be included in their song and everyone got up and performed....however it is a little hard when you are competing against real country music stars! The impromptu performances were great and we all got our own private concert.

Thanks for a wonderful day and a great weekend. I really enjoyed seeing a new part of our Country. Have a lot of fun on your honeymoon too...this might be the coolest honeymoon ever: the Maldives, Bali, Singapore...the list went on! Lucky!

Anne and Jason had a wonderful, long wedding day full of Chinese Traditions and lots of fun. They started early: Anne started getting ready at 5am and the first Tea Ceremony was at 11am, but they were still smiling when the dance hit full gear at 10:30pm. I had a great day laughing with the chill bridal party and enjoying the company of Anne and Jason. They are easiest going people around, and since Anne was changing into a new outfit for the reception she wasn't concerned about her dress at all...which of course I took full advantage of ( I generally don't get too many brides who are totally willing to sit in the middle of a dirty parking garage on their dress!).

And since it was a very looong day, this is a very looong post...even after I took out a TON of funny stuff and cute memories. This is a very condensed version of some of the unique moments.

In Chinese Tradition, the Groom comes to the Brides home to find the her. However, he needs to get past a group of Bridesmaid first. This usually involves paying the Bridesmaids large amounts of money and doing ridiculous stunts in order to get past the front door.

The Bridesmaids wouldn't budge until He'd paid up, done 99 push ups and sang some love songs for his Bride.

Finally, he gets into the house...only to have to pay them more! Poor guys (lucky Bridesmaids).

Anne was worth two full pigs :) And no, I didn't try any, even though I was offered on several occasions. It was a little too early for me to start thinking about pork roast.

The First Tea Ceremony begins and Anne and Jason are showered with red envelopes filled with money and lots of Gold jewellery.

Receiving some very special gold bracelets. Anne was emotional with all the tradition and family.

The ceremony was full of tears and smiles. There was no bigger smiles then when these two strolled down the isle after being declared Husband and Wife. Yay!

This is one of my favs from the day. I could have done a whole posting of just Anne and Jason on sitting on the floor of the Garage.

Same shot as above, I just got up and changed my perspective. (That's my photography tip for the day, always move about to see things differently)

Some of the details of the lovely Venue at the Coast Plaza.

This made me laugh a lot. They were playing a game where the guests got to choose what style of kiss Anne and Jason had to do. Someone requested a Wet Willy (not sure how that is a kiss, but oh, well!). Anne nearly died!

Another Fun game (Chinese receptions are full of the most creative games). Jason is trying to get a pen tied around his waist in to a Corona Bottle blindfolded with Anne guiding him.

First Dance as husband and wife. It was to my own first dance song and I smiled the entire time....

Kristin & David- August 2 2009

Kristin and David were meant to find each other. It is so obvious when they're together the rest of the world stands still. I loved watching them throughout the day....Dave kept stealing glancing at his beautiful Bride and Kristin was absolutely glowing. It was wonderful to be a part of so much love. I wish you both a lifetime of happiness.

I hope you are having lots of fun in Maui...I'm jealous!

Kristin and Dave decided to meet before the ceremony since they wanted to have the ceremony in the early evening, right before the Reception. We had the two of them meet on a tree lined path in the Ravine. They knew it would be emotional, and it was. It was perfect that they could embrace and talk without the added pressure seeing each other for the first time walking down the isle for the ceremony. I would recommend this option for anyone a little nervous of that first glance. They couldn't stop kissing and looking into each others eyes. Dave must have said a million times how Beautiful Kristin looked...and he was right!

One of the sweetest ceremonies ever. Kristin's bridesmaid read "Guess how much I Love You" for the ceremony reading. I bawled my eyes out, it is such a sweet children's book with so much special meaning. Then, at the end of their vows to each other they both said "I love you to the moon and back" a line from the book...I was a puddle. Can you not just feel the warmth in their eyes?

So many cute purple details! Behind the Scenes Events was in charge of throwing this party!

In case you couldn't feel the love oozing out the other images, one last dancing picture. It was like they were the only ones in the room.

Curtis & Oksana- August 1, 2009

Curtis and Oksana were married in a traditional Ukrainian Orthodox ceremony at St. John's Cathedral followed by totally nontraditional reception at one of my favourite Edmonton restaurants, Packrat Louie. The day was a mix of thoughtful customs and contemporary fun, but the one thing that was consistent was the way Curt and Oksana looked at each other. It was intense, honest and beautiful. The kind of love that gives you goosebumps simply by being in its presence.

Getting dressed is always a really fun part of the day.

Oksana is absolutely stunning. Her timeless beauty was so easy to photograph.

St. John's is a beautiful Church Downtown Edmonton.

Curtis is smiling even though hot wax was streaming down the candle and making a wax pool on his hands. It looked painful to me, he must have been really happy :)

I was so thrilled when they called to tell me they were expecting and wanted to me to photograph their little bundle of joy. Megan and Mark were married in a outdoor ceremony in the park behind Mark's family home. It was a such a hot day! The personalized water bottles came in very handy for their guests as well as the cute fans Megan made. The day went perfectly, despite the heat and cloudless sky...lots due in part to the wonderful Michelle French, from Behind the Scenes Events, who I adore working with. We enjoyed formal pictures around the nature trails before heading over to the Garrison for the reception at the Officers Mess. Overall, a picture perfect day with two of the sweetest people I have had the pleasure to work with. Thanks for including me in your plans!

Erin and Shane are getting married next year in Invermere at (one of my husbands favourite gold clubs) Eagle Ranch and I am lucky enough to join them on their day! Erin and Shane live in Maryland and found me through the nifty site Wedding Wire. They were up in Alberta for the weekend before making their way out to BC and we were lucky enough to find a time to meet up for the first time. I liked them immediately and found their love for each other so endearing. They are some of the coolest people I ever met too: Shane works for NASA designing space suits!! I was absolutely fascinated by this fact and bothered him with a million and one questions! So cool.

Thanks for sharing your evening with me. Erin said it best when she remarked how wonderful it is to just enjoy nature and it's beauty for a whole evening. I wholeheartedly agree. How amazing is my job? Always surrounded by beautiful surroundings and amazing people.

Talia and Zach were married at St. Basil's with their reception in the Church's huge hall. This couple and their Bridal Party were a lot of fun, even in the hot, hot summer heat. Talia's brother even tried running after the ice cream truck! Anything to keep cool! We photographed their formals in the ravine within the tall spruce trees and enjoyed the shade. I didn't know till the reception that I was in the also in the presence of movie stars! Talia has a some roles in movies produced in Western Canada and her bridesmaid Anna is also an actress who recently starred in a independent film that sounds amazing. Pretty impressive! It was also great working with my videographer friends over at Imago Weddings another time this summer :)

Talia & Zach: Your day was perfect, not a cloud in the sky and full of fun & friends. I wish you both nothing but blessings in your future together!

Tim and I recently had a Beloved Session with Photographer Jesh De Rox. He just posted some of his favourites on his Blog and I simply had to share them with you. I'm not used to being on the other side of the camera and the experience was wonderful. I really felt like he captured "us" and isn't that the whole purpose of photography? Kristina and Phil were married at the St. Albert Parish followed by a reception at the St. Albert Inn. The day went went by in a blink of an eye as this couple was sooo busy having fun. They brought along a great Bridal Party to share in their day and everyone had more then a few laughs...and a *few* cries come the reception. Kristina is very talented: she just recently graduated Dental School from UofA and was the Panda's Assistant Captain as the hockey team captured 4 out 5 National titles. Very impressive :) But as the "shoe game" showed the verdict is still out on who is a better hockey player!

Sometimes, even though you scout locations just days before a wedding, construction can change our plans...that day we were surprised to encounter a lovely dirt pile to get across. No problem, just hike it!

The aftermath of the dirt pile on Kristina's pedi. Oh well, they were totally up for it...especially when they saw what was on the other side of the dirt pile....

This shot, among many others, was what I wanted to get...makes a little dirt seem like a very small obstacle!

These guys are just pure class! :) :) :)

Only slightly scary to go into abandoned farm buildings...but again, it's always worth it!

Nicole and Richard were married at the beautiful Lily Lake Resort just north of Edmonton. It is a unique complex with lots of cabins, camping and activities for all the guests. I thought it was a great way to have a wedding with everyone staying for the weekend enjoying family and friend's company. The ceremony was on the patio overlooking the grounds. I just loved watching Nicole through the ceremony and throughout the day. She commits to every emotion and feeling as she is experiencing it, laughing with her whole body or crying without holding back. It is wonderful to see people love life and embrace their emotions. We photographed the portraits around the grounds as Nicole & Rich rode a horse drawn carriage. Perfect. The evening was topped off by a hilarious reception complete with a buffet that included every type of meat known to mankind and flaming baked Alaska. Yum!

Alana and Dave are getting married this September and we were able to meet up this week to photograph their engagement session. We literally had parked when it started raining...lightly at first and we all thought, no problem! But, within 10 minutes it was a full-out downpour. Great for the Edmonton drought but sad for our session :( However, we hung out in the rain and had some fun feeling like kids playing in the rain. We squeezed some more images in before finally retreating (aka running through the mud) back to Dave's truck. Good times.

Anne and Jason are getting married this August and I'm lucky enough to be their photographer for the day. We spent a evening together in SW Edmonton getting to know each other and "hanging out" in a cow pasture. I found out that Jason has one of my dream jobs: he works for my beloved Edmonton Oilers :)

It ended up being the perfect evening for an engagement session. June nights are just so lovely and you both were so fun to photograph. Because you had to wait long for your blog posting....it is extra long... so enjoy!

Jackie and Jordan were married on the beach at Pigeon Lake this past weekend. It was a beautiful ceremony overlooking the lake with all of their closest family and friends their to support them. We utilized the water front and the foresty areas surrounding the lake for some rural style portraits. The groomsmen were all very impressed with my ability to 'take down' any trees that were in my shots and I was impressed with the BP hiking through the dense bush for the perfect image. How fun! The day wrapped up with a reception at the local community centre where fun was had by all. Thanks for including me in your plans, I can't wait to show you the rest of the images!

Kristina & Phil- esession

Kristina and Phil are getting married in a few short weeks in St. Albert. We had been waiting for Edmonton to get "a little bit green" before shooting, and finally it seems as though the city is finally in full spring mode. We shot around a construction site (thank goodness for Phil's big truck being able to drive us in like we owned the place) and shot around an abandoned farm....well, abandoned except for the cows. The cows were quite scared of us while we were in their pasture and kept their distance. However, when started heading for the fence to get out of the field the cows went a little crazy and decided to box us in. I didn't think Kristina & Phil could hop a fence so quickly to get to "safety". Although I know cows are harmless, these ones did seem a bit too curious for my liking. Overall, a fun and eventful shoot :)

Also, a special shout out to Kristina who has convocation today for U of A dentistry. CONGRATS!

My niece Isabelle recently had a project in school were they to do a presentation on an artist of their choice. While other kids were doing projects on famous artists, Isabelle choose to do her project on ME. I only wish I could have been in her class to hear her speak and see the set up: she had some of my pictures from my site, a camera and a mini wedding album. Somehow this was all arrange around a decorated ice cream pail (since I love ice cream!). You gotta love kids creativity. Even though I wasn't there see the presentation, her Mom sent me the text from the report.

If you like ice cream you have something in common with Kelsy.

Kelsy was born in Innisfail. When she was a kid she loved dancing! She went to N.A.I.T. and now she lives in Edmonton. She lives with her husband, my Uncle Tim.
She has been working for five years. Her medium is a camera. She won the award of Professional Photographer of the Year for Alberta. She also loves me and roses.

Stacey & Justin- May 30 2009

I had the pleasure of photographing Stacey and Justin's beautiful day last Saturday in St. Albert. After a wonderful heartfelt ceremony we headed to the U of A campus for some portraits before heading over to Cha for Tea Palace for a traditional 10 Course Chinese dinner. Well, not completely traditional since they substituted the Shark Fin soup for something a less controversial and definitely more humane, Hot & Sour Soup (great choice! I'm also a fan of not killing sharks solely for their fins). The perfect day was topped off by sentimental speeches and the couples first dance...ever. They had never danced together before their wedding night...not even a practise dance in their kitchen :) It was so sweet. Another great touch was the personalized wedding date & names toothbrush favours. One of my favourite favours to date! Cute, personal ( Justin is a dentist) and totally practical. I was psyched to try mine out and for the next three months every time I brush my teeth I'll think of your awesome day!

Justin sent over a beautiful watch with a card that had a recording of his voice when Stacey opened it. I may be living under a rock, but I had no idea such a thing even existed. Let me say, there wasn't a dry eye in the house after she opened that card!

I think Stacey looks like Scarlett Johansson quite a bit.

My first real "spring" wedding of the year meant that I took advantage of all the pretty spring colours.

Kristin and David are getting married this August and are right in the thick of planning their wedding with Michelle French of Behind the Scenes Events. We got together last week to shoot some engagement pictures with along with Kristin's son Ethan. This guy has A LOT of energy, no wonder Kristin is in such great shape! We photographed the little family at our neighborhood playground (since K&D are awesome they choose to live in T-Towne). Ethan acted exactly how a 6 year old would in the vicinity of a playground...it was all go-go-go! David tried to get him to sit patiently for a family pic by saying " Come on Ethan, these pictures are really important in our Families' future". I thought that was perfect. Sometimes in all the craziness we forget we are making memories everyday. And with the start of this new family, I couldn't think of a better reason to document the memories.

Oksana & Curtis: esession

I had the pleasure of photographing Oksana & Curtis last night . I really enjoyed shooting them in construction sites and train yards... and really enjoyed not getting in trouble for trespassing in places we obviously shouldn't have been. Oksana & Curtis have a deeper connection then I can put into words. The pure love for each was so strong it actually brought me to tears while photographing them... I have never cried at an engagement session before but was blown away by all the love surrounding me. It was absolutely magical.

Oksana's family moved her from Ukraine 11 years ago and Curtis lived in the UK after attending NAIT. Eventually this couple met through friends. Can you imagine the series of events that brought them together? Every decision we make can alter our life in amazing ways.

Rhea & Carlo- May 23 2009

Rhea & Carlo were married in St. Joesph's Basilica with a beautiful reception at the Crowne Plaza. Jolyn from Nuance Occasions was their stellar wedding planner, and just as I knew their wedding day was perfect! The Catholic ceremony was complete with traditional Filipino ceremonies which really personalized the event. I really enjoyed watching and photographing Carlo take care of his bride during the ceremony by wiping her tears and holding her tight. These two have an amazing connection.....one that has kept them together while Rhea has worked overseas for years. Any couple that can survive years of long distance has what it takes to go the distance. They even talk three times a day while Rhea is in Japan, which I thought was amazing.

Carlo and Rhea, your wedding was full of friends and family and those who love and support you. Judging by the size of your Bridal Party and reception you have lots of love backing you up. Thanks for sharing your day with me, it was such a pleasure working with you both ( I especially enjoyed laughing all day at the 100 expressions of R&C...sneak peek below of the million faces they made throughout the day!)

Christine and Kyle are getting married this October in Canmore and I am so pleased to be a part of their day. Christine is actually a wedding and portrait photographer in Fort Mac, so it is extra special that she choose me! It is always an honour when another photographer trusts me to capture their day. I really enjoyed hanging out with them on a warm spring evening and seeing how cute they are together. It's always a pleasure to photograph true love :)

Adam & Michelle- May 16 2009

Adam and Michelle were married this past weekend at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Cochrane followed by an amazing reception at Silver Tip Golf Club in Canmore. The whole day just flew by! That was partly due to the fact that Adam and Michelle are some of our great friends and shooting their wedding was just like hanging out ( expect for the fact that I was taking photographs and they were snuggling in front of me the whole time..not exactly our normal Friday night). I also knew half of the BP and they absolutely rocked my world......especially when I called Adam's cell on Friday night and asked them all to bring hiking shoes so they could scale a bit of a rock wall for our formals location. Everyone did awesome and the images are totally worth the hike. The party that night did not disappoint as the DJ brought his arsenal of late 90's tunes among others. Personally I enjoyed Bud and Robb's rendition of the NSYNC's dance with chairs. That little number got the 5D video capability up and running for the first time ever. I would post the video here, but you may just pee your pants from laughing too hard.

Michelle & Adam- I am so proud of both of you guys. I didn't know how you would pull off graduating from Medical school/Dental School and have a wedding all in essentially the same month. But somehow you did and managed to have one of the greatest weddings of all time. I loved witnessing your vows and being the one to capture your memories. I was able to cry at your slideshow but still photograph that priceless first dance. It was a honour to be there as a friend and especially your photographer. Thanks for a wonderful day and a awesome party. You guys are amazing friends and we love you both!!

Thank goodness you are relaxing on the beach in Maui now, you deserve that!!!

Again with the crazy wind....Although all my first ideas were basically garbage after the wind picked up like crazy, the trick to being a wedding photographer in Alberta is working with nature, not against it!

Yup, me and Timmy at the reception dancing up a storm. We had so much fun dancing the night away with all our friends. And look, I've even watermarked the image..so don't even think of stealing such a breathtaking photograph! :)

Megan & Mark- esession

Meeting up with Megan and Mark took a bit a pre-planning due to the fact we live in different cities...but we were finally able to make it work when I went South for a wedding this past weekend. We met up outside the city of Calgary and battled through some chilly weather for some pretty cool engagement pictures. They were quite brave and had no problem sitting on the edge of a mini "cliff"... my kind of clients :)

Thanks for braving the cold weather...even if it meant Megan couldn't wear your new sundress you bought especially for the shoot. You guys rocked the scarves!

This past weekend I had the opportunity to photography my brothers' growing family of four. If any other photographers out there have tried to shoot 4 kids all under the age 8....it is quite the task to have them all happy/smiling/looking in the general vicinity of the camera. So instead of setting ourselves up for a bit of stress, we had fun with it and just let the kids be themselves. As my husband so cleverly pointed out, not everyone is looking at the camera in the family picture, but it feels just so "them". If I could do anything as a photographer it would be to capture people as they really are, and I think this just about does it :)

Jared. He told my husband that Tim was soooo strong he was stronger then an Incredible. Tim hasn't seen The Incredibles so some of the compliment was wasted, but his ego was stoked all the same.

Isabelle. My little performer! She has the starring role of Peter Pan in her Musical Theatre school! I am so proud of her!!

Cora. We are so blessed to have her healthy and to receive positive results from her CT scan. She is going to be our little genius :)

Heidi. She's a pretty awesome girl who informed her family she is a "tomboy"...this while wearing all pink and preparing for dance class. Too cute.

Gabby and Dom's wedding had the wow factor... from the hands-down-nicest hotel room I have ever been in for Gabby's getting ready (word on the street is that Brittany Spears stayed there) to the ceremony in the most historical and beautiful church in Edmonton (aka St. Joesph's Basilica) to the elegant reception at Sutton Place Hotel, everything was perfect!

I was blown away by all the perfect details....like D&G cuff links (get it, D&G??) the bottles of Champagne for their favours, the tiramisu dessert made by Dom's award winning Mom, the shoes (oh, the shoes!!!I was in Shoe Heaven!) and the full 5 course Italian dinner, the entire day was so luxurious & just so Gabby and Dom :). From that first kiss that was totally too hot for a Catholic Church to finishing off the night with a beautiful first dance, the entire day was amazing.

You guys are as both as stunning on the inside as the out, which makes you pretty great people to be around. Your wedding day was incredible and I am soooooo excited to show you the rest of the images.

Have fun on your Honeymoon.... I'm not going to lie, I am SOOO jealous of your glass bottom hut over the ocean in Bora Bora. You will have the most amazing time!!

The elevator opened up and Gabby and Dom were kissing perfectly, oh so sweet! Nah, I'm a terrible liar... the awesome videographers at Imago Weddings set this up while I was crawling around trying to find a lost diamond...long story. But I caught the last bit of the shot and think they're darn pretty cute :)

I was a little nervous to photograph Rhea and Carlo since Rhea lives in Japan and all of our communication has been through email. I was hoping we'd get along great...and I was right! They braved an approaching thunderstorm, got a little wet and a lot wind blown for this shoot...my kind of clients! I think is was worth it (and we only trespassed a little). I began to remember after this long cold winter how I absolutely love those few moments before the rain. There is just something about the smell and anticipation in the air. I also remembered how I love photographing esessions at super speed to get us out of the rain!

Leanne & Maurice- May 2 2009

Leanne and Maurice were married at St. Andrew's Church followed by a lovely reception out at The Country Lodge. As the day went on I realized more and more that they are both the kind of people who do the right thing simply because it is the right thing. They are the type of people I want to surround myself with since knowing them simply makes the world feel like a better place. Throughout the day I found myself surrounded with so much love, sincerity and integrity it continually warmed my heart. Photographing their wedding I couldn't have made me happier. It's funny since the more I have gotten to know Leanne and Maurice, the more they seemed that they couldn't be more different...from different countries and backgrounds to start... yet the depth of their connection has gone beyond any differences and obstacles in their way.

So after The Journal article came out I was really unimpressed with the way they unbelievably twisted around my words (and on the front cover too, seriously!). After initially feeling really terrible in case I had offended anyone with something I had never said, I realized that what done was done and there was no way I could change what had been written. I had to take a couple of deep breaths, let it go and move on. But this very small incident has allowed me step back and evaluate the way I deal with problems in life. Bad things are going to happen and there is nothing we can do about it, but how we step back and deal with our problems, big or small, defines who we are. Our happiness does not depend on the things that happen to us, but how we choose to deal with them. No one decides how we feel but ourselves. I chose a long time ago to be positive and to be at peace with my life. My life has definitely not always been easy, but I keep learning that....

Arwyn and I had a great afternoon yesterday dressing up like fairies, splashing in a huge puddle and running through open fields. Oh, to be 4 again! I'm sure you'll agree she is as cute as a button :) After all our hard playing I'm sure she she was out like a light...Arywn could barely keep her eyes open by the end of our date. So adorable!

It felt great to be outside in some sunshine...now I can't wait for spring to get here!

Today is my Birthday. I love birthdays. Truly, getting older isn't a bad thing when you consider the alternative. It's another year at the doorstep waiting to be lived and appreciated. I've got lots of goals and big things in store for my 26th year including my goal to really soak it all up. This is the only life I have, I might as well take it all in.

For my 26th Birthday I have compiled a list of 26 things about me to share with you.

I know it's not wedding pictures, but don't worry, wedding season starts in a couple of weeks and I can start showing off what your actually here for :)

26 Things about Kelsy

1. I love love love Tim. He makes me laugh ALL the time and although he could be the strangest person I know, and I love him for that.

2. I love to travel. I have been to 27 countries and plan on going to all 7 continents sometime or another. Backpacking is the best way to see a lot on a tight budget and really experience people and cultures. The stories we have from getting off the beaten track still amaze me when I think back at them.

3. I am always writing lists, perhaps 4 a day. I like the sense of accomplishment crossing something off, even if it is just simple things.

4. I am turning into my mother. Not sure how it happened, but all of a sudden I realized I do so many things the same ( hence Tim's new nickname for me, "Pat"). I do not find this a bad thing since she is the most amazing person in the world.

5. I have had my own full time Photography business since January 2007. I completely love it and I am learning more and more everyday.

6. I like to listen to the music of Jack Johnston, John Mayer, Ben Folds, Rob Thomas, Matt Huchinson, Bedouin Soundclash, Donavon Frankenreiter and Matt Nathanson.

7. I go to the William Lutzky gym classes every morning...but mostly for the post work out visit with Claire, Brandy and Michelle. Feel free to join into the fun...9am :)

8. I love the Oilers. Not just a little bit, but a slightly crazy amount. I know the stats and yell at the TV on bad nights…which was al ot this year. However they are the only thing that gets me through an Edmonton Winter and can't help but adore them.

9. I don't like any sort of clutter, knick knack or trinket. Even buying throw pillows was a stretch for me. I'm into simple Lines and clean design...

10. I love deals almost as much as I love my Birthday. A sale is pretty much the best thing ever. People wonder how we can afford to travel so much ("how can you afford not too?" is usually my first answer) but if you have ever seen my grocery shop you'd be amazed at all the money I save :)

11. I have 19 nieces and nephews and they all crack me up. It is so much fun watching them grow up and become amazing these little people.

12. I will never be good enough for myself, but my drive is what gets me up and makes me work harder at my business, go to workshops and seminars, and never stop learning.

13. I go out to eat way too often and could write a top 50 list for favorite restaurants in Edmonton. (please feel free to add to this list, lol)

14. I concussed myself my first time skiing right when Tim and I started dating. After the ride of shame in the ambulance I decided I was going to be a really good skier, and now I am very proud to keep up on nearly any hill.

15. My family is the most important thing to me in the world. It is awesome having 7 older siblings and the fact we fill an entire house with kids and love at Christmas.

16. Our new house could not be any more perfect for us. I adore it and relish the fact that we put a lot of sweat and tears into making it 'ours'.

17. I would like to have children, but share in a fear with Tim that I might not love them like everyone else LOVES their children. What if they pass me my baby and I am like "okay, this is a nice baby" not all blubbery and not "she is the most amazing thing in my life!!"

18. I really enjoy a bowl of Lucky Charms in the morning. They're just so magically delicious.

19. Mexico is my favorite place in the world. Been there 7 times. I love a lot of beautiful countries, but can't get enough of Mexican food, people, beaches, & sun. It could be because Tim and I were married there and it just a special place for us.

20. I make up nick-names for inanimate objects like remotesky and lensy-lens.

21. I love ice cream. Really, any flavour will do.

22. My favourite TV shows are The Office, The Soup, Criminal Minds, Flight of the Conchords, and reality TV like Survivor, Amazing Race, DYTYCD and my guilty pleasure show Rock of Love (yes, I am aware of how horrible it is, but I just can't stop).

23. Forgiveness is the key to happiness.

24. I only get my hair done, like once or maybe twice a year. It's long so it doesn't need to be done as often, right???

25. I still cry at my clients weddings especially when they write their own vows.

26. Not a day goes by where I don't count my many blessings.

Today is our anniversary. 3 years ago today we were on the beach in Tulum, Mexico, saying our vows to each other in front of 50 of our favourite people in the world. I can't believe how time has past so quickly from that day to now. I also can't believe how much more I love Tim now. I know it's an old saying at weddings to hope that "today is the day that you love each other the least", but couldn't be more true. I thought on that day that I loved him more then anything, but that love has multiplied a million zillion times since then. I can't image my life without the guy who makes me laugh every single day and does crazy things just because he loves me. Life just goes by so fast and I'm so glad I'm with someone who also understands the importance of making every day matter. Together we tackle trying new things, new foods and new countries. Together we are the perfect team to experience (to really experience, not just live) life together and try to make our moments count.

We don't remember days, only moments.

And the fleeting snippets of memories from our Wedding are ones I hold on too and cherish.

Like....

My brother walking me down the isle as I stared at Tim waiting at the end with that beautiful smile on his face.

Messing up the first line of my self-written vows. Laughing at the mistake (it was a good one). Crying through the rest of my vows. Then being stunned with the beauty of Tim's well thought words. My jaw dropped and my eyes filled with tears. I knew he loved me, but I couldn't believe the sincerity and the depth of his promises to me.

The hugs after the ceremony. Especially from my Mother.

The speeches at our simple reception and the song my nieces and sister wrote and sang for me. I can't even think of that without getting choked up. I had never had anyone write a song for me and it was more thoughtful-hilarious & tear-jerking then I could have ever imagined.

And of course, our first dance poolside just under the full moon. At that moment I couldn't image life getting any better. But it has and I'll be eternally grateful.

Weddings are beautiful & magical but marriage is even better.

Baby Leela

After first meeting Jess and Yatin a few years back to photograph their lovely wedding I got a email announcing their expected arrival of their beautiful daughter Leela. It was a wonderful surprise to hear from them and be asked to photograph little miss Leela. She was an absolute treat!! She barely made a peep and spent the session sleeping away to the sounds of rain. I was in baby heaven :)

So Leela, How do you know you've got the coolest parents in the world? You live downtown in the hippest condo, the nursery is full of vintage-modern design & clean lines, there's a book on the table about having a "green" baby, you're cloth diapered, and your change table has a ipod dock (what cool baby wouldn't have there own ipod?) Love it!

Thanks for letting me in your home again. It was such a pleasure to meet the new center of your world.

Okay, so this image deserves an explanation....
It was taken 'sneakily' with my point and shoot camera in Punta Cana a couple of years ago. This couple had matching suits for every day of the week. I can only hope this is Tim and I in 40 years (minus the speedo thong!). Any couple that wears matching swim wear is obviously beautifully in love :)

More exciting news

A couple of weeks before I left for Santa Fe I received a wonderful notice in the mail from the Professional Photographers of Canada. I have been awarded my Craftsman of Photographic Arts, also know as my CPA. This award is earned through points awarded in competitions, education within the industry and involvement within the PPOC. I am pleased to be awarded this prestigious title. What makes it more special is that at my age of 25 years old I am one of the youngest professional photographers in Canada to EVER receive this award. So that is kinda exciting!

Anyway, I'm off for my beautiful sister Natalie's milestone 40th Birthday this weekend. We are taking a Banff weekend to celebrate getting older, wiser and more awesome....and she still looks about 22 so all the more reason to celebrate!

Leanne & Maurice- esession

Last Week I had the opportunity to photograph Leanne and Maurice, a couple of the sweetest people ever! Even though poor Maurice was battling a head cold he didn't once act like he didn't want to be snuggling his lovely fiance. We had a beautiful afternoon hanging out downtown in the crisp March air. I enjoyed hearing about their lives and their puppy, but most of all I enjoyed seeing the two of them truly enjoy spending the afternoon out in the cold together :)
